| Course Description: | This training builds on the information presented in the Media Outreach 101 webinar. It provides background on high-level media outreach tactics, including how to be an effective spokesperson. Training includes how to deliver key messages in TV, print, and radio interviews. It also includes a chance to practice in a mock on-camera interview. The training will provide a deep understanding of the statewide media markets. And it will cover less common media outreach tactics, such as editorial board meetings and desk-side briefings. In the end, everyone should: • Have a clear idea of how to best deliver their key messages; and • Feel comfortable planning and preparing for media interviews. Learning Objectives/Goals • Develop clear understanding of creating basic messages for media outreach. • Increase comfort level as an on-and-off-camera spokesperson. Includes gaining a strong understanding of how to prepare for interviews. • Have an understanding of the best ways to take control of media interviews and sharing key messages. • Earn a higher level of knowledge of media outreach tools needed for local outreach. Includes op-eds, desk-side briefings, and editorial board meetings. • Gain insights about working within specific media markets, including information about local outlets and media spokespersons. Go to www.whcrc.org/otherevents.cfm The Presenters Tod Steward, Senior Account Executive at GMMB, has 13+ years of corporate public relations experience. Tod manages the public relations strategies for the Washington State Department of Health Tobacco Prevention and Control Program. He also leads the secondhand smoke campaign within the agency. And he secures media hits for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Tod has a keen sense of news judgment, and corporate media relations remain his primary area of expertise. His background in TV and radio news anchoring allows him to establish local, regional, national and worldwide media ties. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism from Pepperdine University. Andy Rigsby, also a Senior Account Executive at GMMB, brings experience working in political outreach, communications, and strategy for key issues and candidate campaigns. Andy worked on many winning statewide initiatives, including the clean indoor air and clean energy campaigns. Andy spent 2006 as Chief of Operations for the Washington State Democratic Coordinated Campaign, managing a multi-million dollar budget and 14 field offices. He also works on the media outreach and advocacy team for the Tobacco Prevention and Control Program. With an emphasis on issues related to secondhand smoke and adult cessation, Andy has developed new strategies promoting smoke-free areas and to raise awareness of the dangers of tobacco use. Andy graduated from Wake Forest University in 2003 with a major in Psychology and a minor in Politics. Lunch and drinks will not be provided during these workshops. Please feel free to bring your own. Minimum of 10 registrants required. If registration falls below 10 within one week prior to an event, it may be cancelled.
