| Course Description: | This interactive course will provide the knowledge and skills necessary to teach basic asthma self-management to patients and families with asthma. Core topics discussed are asthma symptoms and pathophysiology, goals of therapy, controlling of environmental triggers, pharmacotherapy, medication administration, assessment and monitoring, inhalation devices, co-morbidities, and effective teaching techniques. Participants will be able to: • Identify important aspects of EPR-3 national asthma management guidelines • Understand common asthma triggers, avoidance, and environmental control measures • Understand an asthma exacerbation • Be able to teach patients how to use asthma medication and delivery devices • Understand importance of asthma education and teaching self management. Presenter Cindy Cooper, RN, AE-C has 28 years of nursing experience and has been a Certified Asthma Educator since 2003. She raised a son with moderate to severe persistent asthma; was a lead school nurse for 4 years with a 200+ caseload of asthmatics district-wide; worked in an allergy and asthma practice from 2004 to 2008; developed an asthma education program; and is a NW Regional Asthma Nurse Educator for Ashfield Healthcare, bringing asthma education to nurses in clinics and hospital settings (1 of 11 in the U.S.). Fritz Merkel, BS, RCP will be joining Cindy with his gift for medication/device training for this educational event. Note: Lunch and refreshments will not be provided during this workshop. Please feel free to bring your own or plan to purchase at a nearby establishment. We will break for a one-hour lunch. |
